Sunset Session

from $445.00

Quobba Station, Western Australia, 2006

Camping at neighbouring Gnaraloo Station we would often head to The Bluff for the later afternoon surfing session and light.

This trip featured thunderous 6 metre swells generated by a punchy storm front that smashed our camper trailer the night before.

The day after the night before, the surf was massive and that afternoon at The Bluff was truly amazing to see. For those that aren’t aware The Bluff is a super rugged desert headland that you can walk right out to the end of and be right amongst the spectacular and powerful surf. This day huge surf was pounding the reef slab at the head of the bluff and spearing massive left-hander perfectly formed walls of water into the bay.

Way too big for me to contemplate surfing it was as amazing experience just to be out on that headland so close to the action. This image with the golden glow of near sunset light punching through those transparent walls of water illuminates spectacularly through the wave and lights up the fore-ground action in front.

Importantly for scale, balance and drama I love the single surfer just clearing over the back of this serious set wave. No doubt breathing a sigh of relief… while contemplating what is coming behind…
